Arthur will be turning 3 in December and after a couple of instances of him climbing out of his cot we have decided it’s time to upgrade him to a toddler room with a “big boy bed”. We’ve started our Toddler Room Planning and tried to involve Arthur as much as possible. He’s also moving bedrooms so he’s so excited when going in to what will be his new room (much bigger than his current box room). I’m looking forward to the fact that he can take some of his toys from the hallway and lounge up to his room now too!
The first thing we did was went to look at beds. I’m so nervous about him being out of a cot, how did he grow up so fast? We went to IKEA and let him lie in some of the beds, he got under the duvets and tucked himself up and looked so sweet. We haven’t decided on one yet but they had a good range to choose from. I also liked this one from Argos. I want to get something that has a little bit of storage underneath too so like the option of the drawer. We’re likely to upgrade him to a cabin bed when he’s older so he has even more floor space as you can never have too much.
I’ve got him excited about his new room by letting him pick his new sheets and bedding and he’s picked this bottom sheet and this duvet. Can you tell what his favourite thing is yet?
I was split between getting the Kallax or Trofast storage for toys but I feel the Kallax looks neater, has more useable space and I prefer that he can just remove the entire box rather than using it as drawers. We’ll likely get a 8 box one that we can lay on it’s side and then use the top as a shelf too. He’s also got his toybox that we personalised for him when he was a baby.
I looked at children’s wardrobes but have decided to go for a full size “adult” wardrobe as it’s such a big room a little one feels wasted. It means I can hide all the messy bits like paint, play doh etc in the top where he won’t be able to get to it for a long while. The chest of drawers we are going to use are from our bedroom (now upgraded to wardrobes). I’m going to repaint them and find some new handles for them. Is there such a thing as car drawer handles?
The window wasn’t an issue in Arthur’s old bedroom as it was too high up for him to reach but in the new bedroom it’s quite a low window (and Arthur is a climber!). I’ve had a look into the different options and I love the idea of having window shutters as a window covering option instead of blinds or curtains. I worry about Arthur climbing on the window sill and getting trapped in the string from the blinds so shutters seem a much safer option. They can be almost completely blackout too and look much neater than a blind. We’ve been looking into DIY Shutters as this is a much more affordable option. You measure and install yourself rather than getting them professionally installed which makes them much cheaper.
Other than the main furniture (bed, wardrobe, drawers, toy storage etc) the only bits left in our Toddler Room Planning is the accessories. Photos/prints, rugs, shelving etc but we’re going to wait until we have the main bits done to work out what room we have left and what parts are looking bare. We’re unsure whether to wallpaper or paint one wall as a feature wall too. All Arthur has said he wants is “cool cars”. I really like this one and think Arthur will love it too!
I’d love to see/hear your ideas for your toddler rooms if you’re also in the process on planning. We’re hoping to finish it around Christmas time (also his Birthday) to have it as a Christmas/Birthday treat for him.
