If you love nothing more than playing games with your friends, why not make your theme for your next party one that’s sure to keep everyone entertained? Fire up the consoles and break out the board games for an evening filled with friendly competition!
Decide on your theme
This is the big one, the basis for your event. Planning your theme around your go-to games is the perfect starting point. Think about the games that you know you’ll all enjoy.
If you all enjoy a spot of trivia, why not become quizmaster and create your own DIY game show? You could have themed questions or make it interactive by getting everyone to guess the song or movie based on the clips you play. You could also lead a few rounds of charades and incorporate some physical challenges.
Go back in time with an arcade game themed night and choose a few titles from the 80s and 90s. After all, there’s nothing like chasing those little yellow dots during a game of PAC-MAN. You could even add neon lights and stock up on retro snacks from your childhood.
Or if board games are more your speed, you could set up favourites like Monopoly, Cluedo and Scrabble. Add some matching décor, such as large Scrabble tiles as drinks coasters or you could hang some Monopoly board-themed posters around the room
For a fast-paced, thrilling evening, why not try a video game extravaganza? Include a mix of console and PC gaming or virtual reality experiences and offer a range of games, from old favourites to online bingo. There are apps you can download to tablets and mobile devices that make accessing these games easy.
Decorate the room
Once you’ve decided on your theme, you can go all-out on decorations. Look out for games-themed banners and posters that could complement the games you’re playing or create your own homemade signs for that personalised touch.
Think about your table settings too. Tablecloths, centrepieces and party favours can all tie into the games you’re playing. Add some balloons and streamers to make the evening extra festive.
You can even have a party in the garden if the weather allows. If you have the space you can set up poptop marquees, have some little fairy lights and a cosy garden set up.
Choose your food and drink
From bites you can grab in the arcade like pizza and nachos to cosy snacks to munch on during a night of board games like hot chocolate and cookies, it can be fun to plan the food and drink for the night.
If you’re hosting games that require a lot of action like charades or if you want to keep everyone fuelled up during an online gaming tournament, you’ll need easy-to-eat snacks like crisps and dips.
Plan your playlist
No party is complete without the perfect soundtrack. The tunes you choose will depend on the type of games you play.
For 80s and 90s arcade games, you’ll want some classic tracks from those decades. Perhaps a mix of dance anthems and chart toppers would work well here.
For a video game night, create a list made up of gaming music from across the decades. Search for old favourites and newer songs that have formed the background to some newer releases.
