I was reading this article at Bella Lingerie and it got me thinking about my own experience into Motherhood and how important finding a correctly fitting bra has been for me. Both during, and in-between breastfeeding and pregnancy.
Women’s breasts change so much throughout pregnancy, breastfeeding and aging in general, and personally I had mixed emotions about these changes. Yes I was so grateful, and fascinated that my body was producing milk to feed my children, but at times I didn’t recognise the person that was looking back at me in the mirror. As someone that’s now breastfed for a total of three years, and counting, I’ve experienced first hand how my body has transformed – and how finding the right fitting bra made all the difference in reclaiming comfort and confidence. Even whilst wearing nursing and non-underwired bras. Yes, it is possible!
Breastfeeding was, and still is an incredible bonding experience but I’d be lying if I said I was happy with the physical changes throughout this process. I am now feeding my second child and after weaning my first, I hated my boobs and thought they’d never go back to “normal” although I was pleased to find I grew to love them after a while. And they did slowly start going back to how they were pre pregnancy.
A well-supported bra helped with my posture, comfort and confidence and helped me start feeling like “me” again. I went to a personal stylist appointment and remember saying “I really hate my arms” and I was told that actually all I needed was a correctly fitting bra! I promptly fitted a bra fitting and was pleased to find out that even whilst pregnant and breastfeeding, you can have fitting appointments that will factor this in to finding the perfect bra for changing breasts.
I know these changes are natural, and reflecting on these times whilst feeding my second child I am in awe at just how incredible woman’s bodies are. But at the same time I am very glad of some tough love in telling me that I need to just invest in some good bras. Sports bras too, especially when I want to get into running again! I’d love to hear what some of your favourite bras are? I’ve found it so strange starting to wear underwired bras occasionally again. Although I’m not sure I’ll ever fully give up on my comfy bras!
