The travel industry has seen a shift towards focusing on eco-friendly and sustainable travel, and the motorhome industry is no different.
Being mindful of the impact you are having on the environment around you is a great way to preserve the planet for future generations. From ecological damage to fuel emissions, motorhomes do play a role in causing harm, although less than if you were to fly.
Here are some tips on how to enjoy your motorhome whilst being sustainable and eco-friendly.
Efficient driving techniques
Fuel emissions are a problem globally, and your motorhome will use more as it is heavier and larger than your car, especially once packed.
The way you drive can help to preserve your tank. Accelerating gently and keeping your cruising speed consistent will help use less fuel. Avoiding sharp breaking will also preserve your petrol – make sure you anticipate traffic lights and corners as early as possible.
Keeping on top of your tyre pressure will also help you to drive as efficiently as possible. Lower pressure means your motorhome has to work harder to rotate the wheels, wasting fuel.
Renewable energy solutions
When you are off on a motorhome adventure, you will need power. There are so many sustainable options on the market that you are spoiled for choice!

First, assess your needs. If you just need to charge your phones then a solar-powered battery pack may do. Having a phone signal and battery is important for mapping your journey and accessing emergency documents such as your motorhome insurance. However, if you are planning on running an electrical stove or heater then an attachable wind turbine seems more suitable.
Waste reduction
Waste production isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of eco-friendly motorhome travel. It is important that wherever you pitch up you leave no trace you were there. This helps to preserve the natural spaces for years to come.
Rather than shoving all your rubbish in a bin bag, take time to separate the recycling and store it separately until you can dispose of it properly.
Water conservation
Water is essential for survival even if you are staying on a campsite! One tip for driving with water on board is to fill your water tank for the journey alone as this will reduce weight and save you fuel.
Where possible, reuse the water you have. This could mean installing a toilet/sink combination where the water from washing your hands flows into the toilet tank and is used for flushing.
Installing low-flow taps are also a small change you can make that has a huge impact. You will still be able to wash your hands and fill up the kettle easily, but it reduces the amount of overall water used.
